    Description

    In my opinion this is........
RARE TYPE XVII THRUSTING SWORD CIRCA 1510:
Exceptional Museum Quality With Its Original Leather Grip!!!
    Discussion:
The Type XVII sword has a long thick blade with a taper to a sharp point; it’s the quintessential thrusting weapon designed for deep, powerful penetration. It’s no coincidence the type XVII was designed at the time full plate armor came into fruition. The Type XVII blade can be short for a one-hand, a bastard sword, or even a long two-hand sword. Blades can be wide or slender, but they all taper to an acute point and are thick and beefy. Some longer blades have a ricasso; others do not. Blade shapes can be flattened, hexagonal, polygonal, or diamond. Tangs also vary by length and depth. The type XVII sword could be considered the first estoc.
    Description:
This superb example is XX inches in total length with a diamond-shaped blade  tapering to a tip, one wide short fuller approximately nine inches in length, horizontal recurved guard with knob-shaped quillon ends, fishtail pommel with a fuller decoration from the blade extending through the quillon block to the pommel,  cross and the letters XL inlaid in latten , original/working life leather grips.
    Conclusion
: A very rare typology sword in exceptional condition. A great addition to any collection.
    Provenance:
    From an old German collection.
