    Description

In my opinion this is a..............
A LATE EASTERN VIKING PERIOD SWORD PETERSEN VARIANT TYPE O
    MUSEUM CONDITION
: There is a big evolution in the study of Viking swords taking place at this very moment. The information you have read in other books on Viking and early Medieval swords using the Petersen, Wheeler, and Oakeshott classifications is based primarily on swords found in Western and Northern Europe. Early books do not cover some of the more esoteric Eastern European variants that were scarce in the West when these books were published. These variants can be sufficiently disparate to cause classification confusion. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, swords from Central and Eastern Europe have slowly made their way to the West. It’s believed there are more Viking swords in Eastern Europe than in the West.
    Discussion
: The Viking reputation as fearless and ruthless warriors has been capitalized on by the movie and television industry. This popularity has propelled a strong demand for Viking swords by arms and armor collectors that will in my opinion last for many years into the future.  The Vikings also had other attributes, they  traveled to better themselves through trade. Vikings traveled where other western Europeans did not. For example, they traveled to the Black and Caspian Seas via rivers. Their trade route to Iran was via Sweden. The Vikings were so successful that they are credited with helping establish the Kingdom of Kiev in 864 CE, which is the nucleus that medieval Russia grew from.
    Conclusion:
The entire sword is in a good state of conservation considering it was burned and buried for over 1,000 years. It has only been necessary to clean and the rust stabilized. This sword has strong character , it can be the centerpiece of any collection.
